Benchmark indices witnessed a choppy trading session on 7 May 2026, with volatility remaining elevated due to the weekly expiry of the Sensex. Despite supportive global cues and a sharp cool-off in crude oil prices, the market failed to sustain momentum at higher levels and traded within a volatile range throughout the session amid profit booking and expiry-led positioning.
At close, the Sensex declined 114 points, or 0.15%, to settle at 77,844.52. The Nifty slipped 4.30 points, or 0.02%, to close at 24,326.65. Bank Nifty ended mildly positive, gaining 66.35 points, or 0.12%, to close at 56,047.40.
Broader markets showed relative strength, with the Nifty Midcap 100 index gaining 676.45 points, or 1.10%, and closing at 62,003.15 points, marking a fresh all-time high. The Nifty Smallcap 100 index advanced 161.55 points, or 0.87%, to close at 18,695.65.
On the sectoral front, Nifty Auto led the market with a gain of 1.93%. Nifty Energy, and Realty also ended in the green. However, IT, FMCG and PSU Bank ended on the weaker side.
In the top gainers list, HDFC Life rose 3.57%. Among top losers, Hindustan Unilever declined by 1.90%. In currency, the USD-INR closed at 94.23, down 0.37, or 0.39%. India VIX closed at 16.62, lower by 0.057, or 0.034%.
Overall, the market closed nearly flat after a volatile session, with broader markets showing relative strength while select sectors ended on a weaker note.
