Nifty 50 traded near 23,639 during the morning session on Tuesday, November 3, ahead of its weekly derivatives expiry. Options data indicates strong put positioning at 23,600 and 23,500, while significant call open interest at 23,700 and 23,800 could restrict further gains. With the Put Call Ratio (PCR) at 1.59 and maximum pain positioned at 23,600, the options setup suggests a positive bias, although resistance at higher strikes remains important.
Indian equity markets witnessed positive momentum during the opening hour of trading on Tuesday, November 3, as the Nifty 50 moved higher ahead of its weekly derivatives expiry. The index recovered from levels near 23,500 and approached 23,640, reflecting buying interest during the morning session.
According to the available options data, Nifty was trading around 23,637–23,639, with readings captured at slightly different points during the session. The recovery has brought the index closer to important resistance levels where significant call open interest is visible.
With substantial put positioning concentrated at 23,500–23,600 and heavy call open interest at 23,700–23,800, the index faces an important test of whether the recovery can continue during the remaining session.
A closer examination of the Nifty options chain shows that put writers have established considerable positions below the prevailing market price.
The Put Call Ratio (PCR) stands at 1.5910, indicating higher put open interest relative to calls. Meanwhile, maximum pain is positioned at 23,600, making it an important reference level for the weekly expiry.
Total call open interest stood at 2,522.93 lakh, compared with total put open interest of 4,044.75 lakh. The significantly higher put open interest suggests substantial positioning at lower strikes.
The displayed change in open interest data also shows stronger activity on the put side. Aggregate call change stood at 2,564.94 lakh, compared with 4,099.13 lakh on the put side.
This positioning indicates a positive market bias. However, the sustainability of the recovery will depend on whether put writers maintain their positions and call writers begin unwinding at higher strikes.
On the call side, the 23,700 strike has the highest overall open interest, with approximately 250 lakh contracts. This makes 23,700 a major resistance level based on the available options' positioning.
The 23,800 strike holds another significant concentration of approximately 245 lakh contracts, followed by 23,650 and 23,600, where substantial call open interest is also visible.
The change in open interest data shows notable call additions at 23,650 and 23,700, with approximately 190 lakh and 185 lakh contracts, respectively. The 23,800 strike has also attracted meaningful additions.
With Nifty trading near 23,640, the 23,650 level represents the immediate hurdle.
A sustained move above 23,650, accompanied by call unwinding, could allow the index to approach 23,700.
However, substantial call positioning at 23,700 and 23,800 suggests that further gains could encounter resistance unless buying momentum strengthens.
On the put side, the 23,500 strike holds the highest concentration of open interest, at approximately 340 lakh contracts. The 23,600 strike follows closely, with around 335 lakh contracts.
The change in open interest data further highlights the importance of these levels. The 23,600 strike has recorded the highest put addition, at approximately 350 lakh contracts, followed by 23,500 with around 335 lakh contracts.
The 23,550 strike has also attracted substantial put additions, making the 23,550–23,600 zone particularly relevant.
With maximum pain positioned at 23,600, this level could influence intraday price movements as expiry approaches.
If Nifty sustains above 23,600 and put writers maintain their positions, the index could continue to attempt to move towards 23,650–23,700.
However, a sustained decline below 23,600 could bring 23,550 into focus.
A decisive break below 23,550, accompanied by put unwinding, could expose the index to further weakness towards 23,500, where substantial put open interest provides another important support reference.
The options data suggests that Nifty is positioned between strong put support at 23,600 and considerable call resistance at 23,700, with 23,800 emerging as the next major overhead hurdle.
The recovery during the morning session indicates improving buying interest. The PCR of 1.59 also reflects stronger put positioning, while maximum pain at 23,600 remains an important expiry reference.
A sustained move above 23,650 could encourage further recovery towards 23,700. If call writers begin unwinding their positions, the index could attempt to approach 23,750–23,800.
Conversely, failure to sustain above 23,650 could bring Nifty back towards 23,600.
A sustained decline below 23,600 would shift attention towards 23,550 and 23,500, particularly if accompanied by significant put unwinding.
For now, the expiry setup suggests a positive bias as long as Nifty sustains above 23,600, although substantial call positioning at higher strikes could restrict gains.
The immediate trading range appears to be 23,600–23,700, while a broader move could extend towards 23,500 on the downside or 23,800 on the upside if either boundary is decisively breached.
With weekly options expiring today, rapid changes in open interest and short covering could trigger sharp intraday movements.
