Nifty Monthly Expiry: 22,800 Breakout May Trigger Short Covering

By Dalal Street Investment Journal (DSIJ)

    Summary :

Nifty traded flat near 22,759 on monthly expiry after retreating from its intraday high of 22,804.50. Heavy put OI addition at 22,700 indicates strong support, while fresh call writing at 22,800 restricts upside. A sustained breakout above 22,800, along with call unwinding, could trigger a short-covering rally towards 22,850–22,900. Meanwhile, 22,750 remains the key pivot for expiry.

    Nifty Monthly Expiry Outlook

Updated As of 1:30 PM IST

On the day of the monthly derivatives expiry, the Nifty 50 index touched an intraday high of 22,804.50 before surrendering its gains to trade almost flat at 22,759, up 5 points or 0.02%, as of 12:30 PM on Tuesday, October 27. The inability to sustain above the 22,800 mark comes amid substantial additions to open interest (OI) on both the call and put sides, suggesting that market participants are positioning for a relatively narrow trading range heading into the final hours of expiry.

Options data indicates that 22,700 has emerged as an important support level, while 22,800 presents an immediate hurdle. With the index hovering around 22,750, the next directional move will depend largely on whether fresh positions at these strikes are retained or unwound.

Put Open Interest: Strong Addition at 22,700 Establishes Immediate Support

The put options data shows significant positioning below the current market price. The highest put OI is concentrated at the 22,700 strike, with approximately 3.35 crore, followed by 22,500 with 2.53 crore and 22,600 with 2.35 crore. The 22,750 strike also carries a substantial put OI of around 2.14 crore.

More importantly, the change in open interest reveals where fresh positions are being created during the session.

The 22,700 put strike has witnessed the highest addition of approximately 2.30 crore, followed by 22,750 with around 1.73 crore. Fresh put OI addition is also visible at 22,650 and 22,600.

This concentration of fresh put positions around 22,700 and 22,750 suggests that put writers are likely positioning for the index to remain above these levels through expiry. Put sellers generally benefit when the underlying index stays above their respective strike prices, allowing the options to lose value as expiry approaches.

However, the important distinction is that 22,700 carries both the highest outstanding put OI and the largest fresh addition. This makes it a more significant support reference than a strike supported only by older positions.

As long as the Nifty remains above 22,700 and put OI at this strike continues to hold, downside pressure may remain contained. A decisive move below 22,700, accompanied by put unwinding, would weaken this support and could expose the index to 22,650 and subsequently 22,600.

Call Open Interest: Fresh Buildup at 22,800 Restricts the Upside

On the call side, the highest outstanding OI is concentrated at the 22,800 and 23,000 strikes, with approximately 2.96 crore each. Considerable positions are also visible at 22,900 and 22,750.

The change in OI provides a clearer indication of the immediate challenge facing the index.

The 22,800 call strike has recorded the largest fresh OI addition of approximately 1.95 crore, followed by 22,750 with nearly 1.47 crore. Fresh call positions have also been added at 22,850, 22,900 and 23,000.

The concentration of fresh call OI at 22,800 is particularly relevant because the Nifty has already tested 22,804.50 during the session but failed to sustain above it.

This suggests that the 22,800 zone is attracting considerable options positioning, including likely call writing, making it an important resistance area for the remainder of the session.

For the index to extend its recovery, it would need to move decisively above 22,800 and sustain there. A simultaneous reduction in call OI at this strike would strengthen the case for a move towards 22,850 and 22,900.

Conversely, if fresh call additions continue at 22,800 while the index struggles to move higher, the probability of sustained upside may remain limited.

Open Interest Change: Call Additions Outpace Put Additions

The overall change in open interest adds another dimension to the expiry-day positioning.

As of approximately 12:30 PM, total call OI stands at 32.96 crore, compared with total put OI of 34.25 crore. While outstanding put positions remain marginally higher, fresh additions during the session show a different picture.

Fresh call OI additions stand at 10.50 crore, compared with 9.28 crore on the put side. In other words, call OI has increased by approximately 1.22 crore more than put OI during the period shown.

This indicates relatively greater fresh positioning on the call side despite the higher total outstanding put OI. The combination suggests that traders are protecting the downside around 22,700 while simultaneously creating substantial positions that could restrict the upside near 22,800.

It is important to recognise that rising OI represents the creation of new outstanding contracts and does not, by itself, distinguish option buyers from sellers. Nevertheless, the concentration of call OI above the prevailing spot price and put OI below it provides useful reference levels for understanding potential resistance and support.

PCR, Max Pain and India VIX: What the Indicators Suggest

PCR (ALL) is slightly higher at 1.03.

A PCR close to 1 suggests that positioning between puts and calls is relatively balanced, without a pronounced directional skew. The marginally higher broader PCR indicates a slight predominance of outstanding put OI, although the larger fresh call additions warrant caution on the upside.

Meanwhile, the maximum pain level stands at 22,750, almost identical to the prevailing index level.

Maximum pain represents the strike at which the aggregate theoretical payout to option buyers would be minimised at expiry, based on outstanding positions. Although it is not a guaranteed settlement level, its proximity to the current market price is noteworthy, particularly when substantial open interest is concentrated on either side.

India VIX stands at 16.68, down 0.48 points. The decline indicates some moderation in expected market volatility, although the volatility index remains elevated enough for traders to remain cautious about sudden intraday movements.

Taken together, these indicators suggest that the market is currently positioned around the 22,750 strike, with 22,700 and 22,800 acting as the immediate boundaries.

Nifty Monthly Expiry: Key Levels and Trading Strategy

The options structure suggests that the 22,700–22,800 range will be crucial during the remaining hours of monthly expiry.

Bullish Scenario: A sustained move above 22,800, supported by call unwinding at the strike, could trigger a recovery towards 22,850 and 22,900. However, traders should distinguish between a brief move above resistance and a sustained breakout, particularly during expiry when option positions can change rapidly.

Bearish Scenario: A breakdown below 22,700, accompanied by unwinding of the substantial put OI accumulated at this strike, would indicate that an important support has weakened. In such a situation, the next downside levels to monitor would be 22,650 and 22,600.

Range-Bound Scenario: If call positions remain firm at 22,800 and put positions continue to hold at 22,700, the index could remain confined to this 100-point range, with 22,750 acting as the immediate reference level.

For traders carrying intraday positions, the behaviour of OI at 22,700 and 22,800 is likely to be more useful than the absolute PCR reading alone. A sustained move beyond either boundary, supported by changes in OI and underlying price action, would provide stronger evidence of directional intent.

Nifty Monthly Expiry Outlook: 22,800 Remains the Deciding Level for the Bulls

The monthly expiry setup points towards a market attempting to consolidate following its recent recovery. The Nifty's failure to sustain above 22,800, despite a strong intraday rebound, highlights the presence of overhead resistance.

At the same time, substantial fresh put additions at 22,700 suggest that market participants are not aggressively positioning for an immediate breakdown.

The balance remains delicately poised. While 22,700 offers immediate support, the relatively larger fresh call additions indicate that the upside faces resistance.

Unless the Nifty sustains above 22,800 or breaks decisively below 22,700, a range-bound expiry around 22,750 remains a plausible outcome. Traders should closely monitor OI unwinding at these strikes rather than relying on static OI levels, as positions can change sharply during the final hours of monthly expiry.

Indian equity markets witnessed a recovery during the opening hour of trading on Tuesday, October 27, as the Nifty 50 rebounded from its early lows ahead of the monthly derivatives expiry. The index moved from around 22,680 during the initial trading period to approach the 22,800 mark, reflecting renewed buying interest after the early weakness.

According to the available options data, Nifty was trading around 22,775–22,789, with the readings captured at slightly different points during the morning session. The recovery has brought the index closer to an important resistance zone near 22,800, where substantial call open interest is visible.

The monthly expiry is taking place against a backdrop of heightened market uncertainty, making options positioning particularly important in determining the index's immediate direction.

With significant open interest concentrated around 22,700 on the put side and 22,800–23,000 on the call side, traders are likely to closely monitor whether Nifty can sustain its morning recovery or encounter selling pressure near overhead resistance.

Options Data Indicates a Battle Around 22,750–22,800

A closer examination of the Nifty options chain suggests that market participants are positioning around nearby strikes, with both call and put open interest showing substantial concentration.

The Put-Call Ratio (PCR) stands at 1.0292, indicating relatively balanced positioning with a slight advantage to the put side. Meanwhile, the maximum pain level is positioned at 22,750, making it an important reference point for the monthly expiry session.

Total call open interest stood at 3,142.25 lakh, compared with total put open interest of 3,234.03 lakh. The higher put open interest suggests that downside strikes have attracted substantial positioning, although this alone does not guarantee that support levels will hold.

The change in open interest data also shows a marginal advantage for puts. The displayed aggregate call change stands at 3,132.71 lakh, compared with 3,214.32 lakh on the put side.

At the individual strike level, fresh positioning is particularly visible around 22,700 on the put side and 22,800–23,000 on the call side. This indicates that market participants are concentrating their positions near the prevailing market price and at higher resistance strikes.

The relatively balanced PCR suggests that neither side has established overwhelming control. However, the concentration of call open interest immediately above the current market price could make it difficult for Nifty to extend its recovery without meaningful call unwinding.

Call Open Interest: 23,000 Emerges as a Major Resistance

On the call side, the highest overall open interest is concentrated at the 23,000 strike, with approximately 290 lakh contracts. This makes 23,000 the most prominent resistance level based on the available options positioning.

The 22,800 strike holds the next significant concentration, at approximately 210 lakh contracts, followed by 23,100 and 23,200, where substantial call open interest is also visible.

Importantly, the change in open interest data shows that 23,000 has attracted the highest call addition, at approximately 112 lakh contracts, closely followed by 22,800 at around 109 lakh contracts.

This positioning makes the 22,800 level particularly important for the immediate trading session.

With Nifty approaching 22,800 during the morning recovery, the index is testing an area where call writers have established considerable positions. A sustained move above this strike, accompanied by call unwinding, could improve sentiment and open the possibility of an extension towards 22,900.

The 22,900 strike also carries a notable call open interest of around 160 lakh contracts, making it an intermediate hurdle before the index approaches 23,000.

However, the strongest resistance remains at 23,000, where both overall call concentration and additions to call open interest are the highest.

Unless call writers begin unwinding their positions at 22,800 and 23,000, upward movements may continue to encounter resistance.

A failure to sustain above 22,800 could lead to profit booking, particularly if the index begins slipping back towards the maximum pain level of 22,750.

Put Open Interest: 22,700 Provides Crucial Downside Support

On the put side, the 22,700 strike holds one of the highest concentrations of open interest, at approximately 250 lakh contracts. The 22,500 strike carries a similarly large concentration, followed by 22,600.

The change in open interest data further strengthens the importance of 22,700. This strike has recorded the highest put addition, with approximately 142 lakh contracts, significantly exceeding the additions at other nearby strikes.

The substantial positioning at 22,700 suggests that option writers are treating this level as an important area of downside support.

Additionally, the 22,750 strike has attracted meaningful put additions of approximately 85 lakh contracts, making the 22,750–22,700 zone particularly relevant for the remaining session.

With the maximum pain level also positioned at 22,750, movements around this strike could influence the index's intraday direction.

If Nifty sustains above 22,750 and put writers maintain their positions, the index could continue to attempt to reclaim 22,800.

However, a sustained decline below 22,750 would bring 22,700 into focus.

A decisive break below 22,700, particularly if accompanied by put unwinding, could weaken the immediate support structure and expose the index to further declines towards 22,650 and 22,600.

The 22,600 strike carries a substantial put open interest of approximately 210 lakh contracts, making it another important downside reference.

Further below, 22,500 remains a major support concentration, given its considerable put open interest and notable additions.

Nifty Monthly Expiry Outlook: Can 22,800 Be Reclaimed or Will 22,700 Be Tested?

The options data suggests that Nifty is positioned between strong put support at 22,700 and considerable call resistance at 22,800, with 23,000 emerging as the most significant overhead hurdle.

The index's recovery from the morning lows indicates improving buying interest. However, the presence of substantial call open interest at 22,800 suggests that the sustainability of this recovery will depend on whether buyers can absorb the selling pressure around this level.

The PCR of 1.03 indicates relatively balanced positioning, while maximum pain at 22,750 remains an important reference point for the expiry session. With the index trading close to this level, fluctuations around 22,750–22,800 could continue unless a decisive directional move develops.

From a trading perspective, 22,800 remains the immediate resistance to watch. A sustained move above this level, supported by call unwinding, could encourage further recovery towards 22,900. If buying momentum strengthens and call writers begin covering their positions, Nifty could attempt to approach the major resistance at 23,000.

Conversely, failure to sustain above 22,800 could bring the index back towards 22,750, where maximum pain is currently positioned.

A sustained decline below 22,750 would shift attention towards 22,700, which has attracted the largest addition to put open interest. If this support breaks alongside significant put unwinding, downside pressure could increase, exposing the index to 22,650–22,600.

The concentration of open interest at 22,500 provides another important lower support reference, although this level remains relatively distant from the prevailing market price.

For now, the expiry setup suggests a range-bound market with a mildly positive bias as long as Nifty sustains above 22,700. However, the substantial call writing at 22,800 and 23,000 could limit the extent of the recovery.

The immediate trading range appears to be 22,700–22,800, while a broader move could extend towards 22,600 on the downside or 22,900–23,000 on the upside if either boundary is decisively breached.

With monthly options expiring today, rapid changes in open interest, position unwinding and short covering could lead to sharp intraday movements. Traders should closely monitor price action around 22,750–22,800, as well as changes in call and put positioning, before drawing conclusions about the direction of the remaining session.
