The stock traded towards the lower end of its 52 week range of ₹218 to ₹308. Crude realisation, production volumes, dividend payments and contributions from subsidiaries are factors linked to valuation.
ONGC explores, develops and produces crude oil and natural gas in India and through ONGC Videsh overseas. Its upstream production supplies domestic refiners and gas buyers. Consolidated accounts also include refining, fuel retailing and petrochemicals through HPCL, MRPL and OPaL, so group consolidated revenue (₹6,62,247 crore) is higher than standalone upstream revenue (₹1,32,509 crore).

ONGC is a producer in India’s energy sector. Oil and natural gas prices, declining output from mature assets, investment requirements and downstream margins can change earnings between quarters.
Consolidated revenue varied during FY24 to FY26, while earnings changed more. FY26 consolidated PAT was ₹49,793 crore, compared with ₹38,329 crore in FY25, while standalone PAT declined 7.6% to ₹32,894 crore. The difference reflects contributions from the broader ONGC group.

Consolidated operating profit margin moved from about 17% in FY24 to 15% in FY25 and 17% in FY26. These margins include refining and marketing businesses; they should not be interpreted as upstream exploration margins.
In Q1 FY27, ONGC reported standalone revenue of ₹46,460 crore and PAT of ₹17,034 crore, up 45.2% and 112.3% YoY. Consolidated revenue was ₹2,04,987 crore, while consolidated PAT was about ₹11,899 crore. The gap reflects group level costs, tax and other accounting effects.
At the 9 October close, ONGC traded near 6.4x trailing earnings and 0.75x book value. Screener indicated ROE of 11.6% and ROCE of 14.2%. Consolidated March 2026 borrowings of ₹1,74,316 crore against equity capital and reserves of ₹3,71,768 crore imply gross debt to equity of approximately 0.47x.

Exploration companies, gas marketers and integrated refiners have different risk profiles. P/E and P/B comparisons are linked to cash flow, reserve replacement, production costs and subsidiary indebtedness. A lower book multiple does not by itself indicate value.
On a technical basis, the share price of ONGC has shown a pattern of lower highs and lower lows on a weekly time frame. A near term support level has been noted at ₹216.
A resistance level has been noted at ₹1243. A move beyond this level would represent a change from the current pattern of lower highs and lower lows.
As of October 9, ONGC is trading below its short term, medium term and long term moving averages on the daily chart. On the weekly chart, the stock is trading below its 10 week, 30 week and 100 week moving averages.

Oil India is a listed Indian upstream company. Reliance Industries has integrated energy operations, but its retail, telecom and other segments mean it is not a like for like valuation peer.
Company | Business Focus | P/E (x) | FY26 Reference |
|---|---|---|---|
ONGC | Oil and gas E&P with downstream | 6.4x | ROCE 14.2% |
Oil and gas E&P | 8.61x | ROCE 11.5% | |
Diversified integrated energy | Not available | ROCE 10.3% |

ONGC’s valuation is linked to upstream crude sensitivity and its consolidated subsidiaries. Oil India’s production mix and reserve base differ; Reliance has non upstream profit pools. P/E alone does not rank them.
Crude Prices and Government Intervention: Lower crude realisations, an unfavourable exchange rate or changes in fiscal levies can reduce upstream cash flows. Marketing subsidies or policy driven sharing of energy costs also remain relevant to public sector energy companies.
Production Decline and Project Execution: Mature field decline, offshore equipment availability and delays in new well hook ups may offset benefits from higher crude prices. Q1 FY27 crude and gas production volumes declined YoY despite rising reported upstream earnings.
Subsidiary and Capital Allocation Risk:- Refining cycles, OPaL profitability, group leverage and capital intensive offshore development can affect consolidated cash generation. Price to book levels may reflect these uncertainties.
ONGC has an upstream resource base, downstream stakes (HPCL 54.90% and OPaL 95.69%) and a FY26 dividend of ₹13.25 per share. FY26 consolidated PAT was ₹49,793 crore and Q1 FY27 standalone PAT rose 112.3%, while production volumes declined year on year in Q1 FY27.
Upstream output, crude price sensitivity, subsidiary cash flows, project execution and valuation relative to normalised earnings are factors linked to future results.
ONGC’s FY26 average nominated field net crude realisation was US$68.40 per barrel, down from US$76.90 in FY25. In Q1 FY27, it rose to US$99.45 versus US$66.13 a year earlier. This price increase was linked to standalone profit more than doubling, while production declined.
Windfall levies have varied with market conditions, and policy intervention remains possible. International benchmark prices, ONGC’s realised price, royalty and cess, and any sharing of downstream under recoveries are separate items.
The KG-DWN-98/2 deepwater development in the Krishna Godavari basin is linked to ONGC’s medium term production outlook. Progress depends on commissioning modules, connecting wells, stable offshore facilities, and moving new gas and oil into commercial sales.
Earlier company commentary envisaged a phased gas ramp up, but schedules are subject to commissioning and reservoir performance. Separately, ONGC announced more than ₹40,000 crore of investment underway in Western offshore projects in August 2026. Production volumes, in addition to capacity guidance, are the data points linked to progress.
ONGC owned 54.90% of listed HPCL at 31 March 2026 and 95.69% of petrochemical subsidiary OPaL. A sum of the parts framework values upstream operations separately from listed stakes and unlisted subsidiaries, then adjusts for debt, minority interests and potential holding company discounts.
HPCL has an observable market value and fluctuating refining and marketing margins. OPaL reported losses in FY26 despite improved operating conditions; carrying value is not the same as readily realisable equity value. Simply adding quoted stakes to ONGC’s consolidated market capitalisation would double count businesses already reflected in group earnings.

The 8% annual growth illustration gives about ₹2667 for 2027 and ₹486 for 2030. These are calculations, not formal targets.
Standalone results cover ONGC’s direct operations, while consolidated accounts include subsidiaries and consolidation adjustments such as HPCL, MRPL and OPaL.
The KG-98/2 development and investments in Western offshore fields may support volumes if commissioning and well performance meet expectations.
Crude and gas price volatility, production decline, policy changes, offshore project delays, subsidiary results and capital expenditure are risk factors.
