The Sensex weekly expiry on November 5, 2026, is witnessing substantial options positioning around 78,800–79,000. The Put Call Ratio (PCR) stands at 1.0240, while Max Pain has shifted higher to 78,800. Strong Call Open Interest (OI) at 79,000 presents an immediate resistance, whereas sizeable Put OI at 78,800 and 78,500 provides potential downside support. With the index trading near 78,946, a sustained move above 79,000 could open further upside, while a break below 78,800 may increase selling pressure during the remaining expiry session.
The Sensex weekly expiry on Thursday, November 5, 2026, is witnessing a closely contested battle between call and put positions, with the index approaching the psychologically important 79,000 level.
The Sensex was trading around 78,946.56 in the latest available reading, just 53 points below 79,000. Despite a marginally positive PCR and substantial put positioning at lower strikes, heavy call concentration immediately above the current price suggests that the index could encounter resistance.
The options structure points towards 78,800–79,000 as the immediate decision zone, with a decisive move on either side likely to influence the remaining expiry session.
The open interest distribution shows total Put OI of approximately 10.10 crore contracts against Call OI of 9.87 crore, resulting in an all strike PCR of 1.0240.
This reflects a relatively balanced options structure, with a slight advantage for put positions.
On the call side, 79,000 carries the largest visible concentration of approximately 89 lakh contracts, making it the immediate resistance zone. The next significant call concentrations appear at 79,500 with nearly 68 lakh contracts and 80,000 with approximately 52 lakh contracts.
On the put side, 78,500 holds the highest visible concentration at approximately 68 lakh contracts. Substantial Put OI is also present at 78,800, 78,000, 78,700 and 78,900.
This creates a layered support structure below the current market price.
Importantly, 78,900 and 79,000 represent the nearest significant option positioning levels. The ability of the index to sustain above 78,900 and overcome the call concentration at 79,000 will be crucial.
The change in open interest chart reveals considerable additions on both sides of the options chain.
The largest visible increase in Call OI is concentrated at 79,000, followed by 79,500, 78,900 and 79,200. Meanwhile, lower strikes between 78,000 and 78,500 show reductions in Call OI, indicating unwinding of outstanding call positions.
On the put side, substantial additions are visible at 78,500, followed by 78,800, 78,000, 78,700 and 78,900.
These developments are consistent with market participants building positions around a defined trading range.
However, additions in OI alone cannot establish whether positions represent fresh option writing or buying. Price movement and option premiums are necessary for stronger confirmation.
The change OI screen also repeats the aggregate figures displayed under total OI, making the individual strike movements more useful than those headline change figures.
The intraday PCR chart shows considerable fluctuations during the trading session.
The ratio initially hovered near 1.05 before declining and subsequently recovering above 1.15 during the morning session. It later moderated towards 0.90 before recovering again to approximately 1.02.
The latest PCR reading of 1.0240 indicates that outstanding put positions marginally exceed call positions.
However, unlike a substantially elevated PCR, the current reading does not suggest overwhelming bullish positioning.
The Sensex has also experienced sharp intraday fluctuations, indicating that the improvement in PCR has not resulted in a sustained directional breakout.
A further rise in PCR alongside a move above 79,000 could strengthen the bullish outlook. Conversely, a declining PCR accompanied by falling prices would suggest weakening support.
The Max Pain analysis shows an upward adjustment in the theoretical expiry settlement reference during the session.
After rising sharply during the opening period, Max Pain fluctuated around intermediate levels before moving higher to 78,800.
With the Sensex trading near 78,946.56, the index stands approximately 147 points above Max Pain.
This creates an interesting situation because the strongest immediate Call OI is positioned at 79,000, while Max Pain lies below the prevailing market price.
Consequently, 78,800 remains an important reference if the index begins to retreat.
Nevertheless, Max Pain represents the theoretical level of minimum aggregate option buyer payout rather than a guaranteed settlement target. Its significance must be evaluated alongside actual price action and changes in OI.
| Sensex Level | Significance |
|---|---|
| 80,000 | Higher resistance with substantial Call OI |
| 79,500 | Major overhead Call OI concentration |
| 79,200 | Intermediate resistance with Call OI additions |
| 79,000 | Strongest visible Call OI and immediate breakout level |
| 78,900 | Immediate support with notable Put OI |
| 78,800 | Max Pain and important support zone |
| 78,700 | Secondary support backed by Put OI |
| 78,500 | Major downside support with the highest visible Put OI |
| 78,000 | Deeper support with significant Put OI |
The immediate contest remains between buyers attempting to push the index above 79,000 and sellers defending that level. A sustained move beyond either 79,000 or 78,800 could provide stronger directional clarity.
The overall outlook remains neutral to cautiously positive, supported by marginally higher Put OI and the index trading above Max Pain. However, the heavy Call OI at 79,000 limits the immediate upside.
If the Sensex crosses 79,000 and sustains above it, particularly with unwinding in the nearby Call OI, the index could move towards 79,100–79,200.
A stronger breakout could subsequently bring 79,500 into focus. Defined risk bullish spreads may help limit exposure to sudden reversals and rapid premium decay.
A sustained decline below 78,900 followed by a decisive break below 78,800 would weaken the immediate support structure.
If accompanied by put unwinding, this could expose 78,700, followed by 78,500, where substantial Put OI is concentrated. Bearish strategies with predefined risk may be considered only after price confirmation.
If the Sensex repeatedly struggles to cross 79,000 while holding above 78,800, expiry trading may remain volatile within a narrow range.
Rapid time decay could affect option premiums, although sudden moves around heavily populated strikes may still trigger sharp price fluctuations. Unhedged option selling carries considerable risk even in apparently range bound conditions.
The November 5 Sensex weekly expiry reflects a relatively balanced options structure, with the PCR at 1.0240 and Max Pain positioned at 78,800.
While substantial Put OI at 78,800 and 78,500 provides potential support, the heavy Call OI concentration at 79,000 remains the immediate hurdle.
A decisive breakout above 79,000 could strengthen upward momentum towards 79,200, whereas a sustained break below 78,800 may expose 78,500.
Until either level is breached convincingly, the index could remain vulnerable to intraday reversals.
With weekly options expiring today, accelerating time decay and sensitivity to spot movements make price confirmation, position sizing and defined risk particularly important during the remaining trading session.
On Thursday, November 5, 2026, the Sensex traded near the 78,800 mark during the morning session as traders positioned themselves for the weekly derivatives expiry.
The available options data showed Sensex spot at 78,722.59 in the open interest snapshot, while the latest PCR and Max Pain charts recorded the index at 78,782.65.
The Put-Call Ratio (PCR) stood at 1.0593, while Max Pain was positioned at 78,600.
The derivatives structure reflects marginally higher Put open interest compared with Call open interest, suggesting a relatively balanced setup with a slight Put-side advantage.
With Sensex trading approximately 183 points above the Max Pain level, Put positioning at lower strikes could provide support. However, substantial Call concentrations at 79,000 and 79,500 may restrict further upside unless Call positions begin unwinding.
The Sensex options structure shows total Call open interest of approximately 797.98 lakh, compared with total Put open interest of around 845.29 lakh.
This represents an excess of nearly 47.31 lakh in Put OI over Call OI. The corresponding PCR stands at approximately 1.06.
A PCR above 1 indicates greater Put positioning relative to Calls. However, the relatively narrow difference between the two sides suggests that the derivatives setup is not overwhelmingly bullish.
The intraday PCR chart shows that the ratio initially declined from approximately 1.05 to below 0.90 before recovering sharply above 1.20. It subsequently moderated towards 1.06.
During the same period, Sensex recovered from its morning lows and moved above 78,780.
The recovery in PCR suggests an improvement in intraday positioning, although the subsequent decline indicates that the earlier strength moderated.
The Call side shows substantial open interest accumulation above the prevailing Sensex level.
Among the visible strikes, 79,000 carries the highest Call OI at approximately 71 lakh. Another significant concentration is visible at 79,500, with around 49 lakh.
Notable Call positioning is also visible at 78,800 and 78,900, carrying approximately 33 lakh and 32 lakh, respectively.
This creates multiple resistance layers immediately above the prevailing market price.
The immediate resistance lies around 78,800–78,900, followed by 79,000, which emerges as the strongest visible Call hurdle.
The Change in OI chart reinforces this structure. Fresh Call additions are strongest at 79,000, with approximately 51 lakh added.
Further additions are visible at 79,500, along with notable activity around 78,800 and 78,900.
A sustained move above 78,900, accompanied by Call unwinding, could improve the intraday setup and bring 79,000 into focus.
However, 79,500 would remain another substantial resistance level.
The Put side shows its largest open interest concentration at 78,000, where OI stands near 57 lakh.
Significant Put positioning is also visible at 78,500, carrying approximately 44 lakh. Other notable concentrations appear at 78,700, 78,600 and 78,400.
This establishes a layered support structure below the prevailing Sensex level.
The 78,700 strike becomes an immediate support reference, followed by 78,600, which coincides with the current Max Pain level.
A sustained move below 78,600 could expose the index to weakness towards 78,500–78,400.
From a broader expiry perspective, 78,000 remains the strongest Put-backed support among the visible strikes.
The concentration of Put OI across several lower strikes suggests that downside moves could encounter support unless Put positions begin unwinding.
The Change in OI chart shows substantial fresh Put additions across strikes below the prevailing Sensex level.
The strongest Put addition is visible at 78,000, with approximately 57 lakh added in the available snapshot.
Substantial additions are also visible at 78,500, with approximately 44 lakh, followed by 78,700, 78,600 and 78,400.
Meanwhile, fresh Call additions dominate several higher strikes, particularly around 79,000 and 79,500.
The chart also shows negative Call OI changes at several lower strikes, indicating a reduction in outstanding Call positions.
This combination suggests a strengthening Put base below the market alongside additional Call positioning at higher strikes.
The positioning indicates an options-defined trading range, with 78,600 acting as an important downside reference and 79,000 emerging as the major upside hurdle.
However, without participant-level data, fresh additions cannot conclusively be classified as writing activity.
The Max Pain chart shows a notable upward adjustment during Thursday's morning session.
The level initially stood near 77,000 before rising sharply towards 78,300. It subsequently moved higher through 78,400 and 78,500, eventually reaching 78,600.
At the same time, Sensex advanced towards 78,783, approximately 183 points above the latest Max Pain level.
The upward adjustment indicates that the theoretical minimum-payout level shifted higher as the options structure evolved.
However, Max Pain is not a guaranteed settlement level, particularly during expiry sessions experiencing sharp directional movements.
The Sensex expiry setup reflects a marginally Put-heavy derivatives structure, with PCR at 1.06 and Max Pain positioned at 78,600.
Immediate resistance stands at 78,800–78,900, followed by 79,000 and 79,500.
A sustained breakout above 79,000, supported by Call unwinding, could strengthen the bullish setup.
On the downside, 78,700 forms the immediate support reference, followed by 78,600 and 78,500–78,400.
A breakdown below 78,400 could shift focus towards 78,200 and the stronger 78,000 Put base.
Overall, the derivatives structure indicates a cautiously positive but largely range-bound bias, supported by marginally higher Put OI. However, substantial Call positioning at 79,000 could limit upside momentum.
The 78,600–79,000 zone remains the immediate battleground, while 78,000–79,500 represents the broader options-defined range.
The direction of the November 5 expiry session could depend on whether Sensex sustains above 78,600 and successfully crosses the significant Call concentration at 79,000.
