Impact And Context

You may recall that earlier in August, ICICI Bank had raised the MAB sharply—to ₹50,000 in metro areas—which drew strong backlash. The bank then reversed that decision, lowering the requirement to ₹15,000 after receiving feedback.

Understanding The Penalty

If you fail to maintain the required MAB, the bank will charge a penalty equal to 6 % of the shortfall or ₹500, whichever is lower.

Existing savings accounts opened before 31 July 2025 remain unaffected. Similarly, salary accounts, senior citizen/pensioner accounts, BSBDA/PMJDY accounts, and accounts for people with special needs are exempt.

ICICI Bank share price stands at ₹1,421.15 per share on the BSE as of 13 August 2025 at 3:30 PM IST. This shows how market sentiment shifts with policy swings.
