HDFC Bank vs ICICI Bank: Detailed Analysis in 2026

HDFC Bank vs ICICI Bank: The Verdict Up Front

HDFC Bank vs ICICI Bank continues to be one of the most watched comparisons by Indian banking stock investors. While both banks have developed a good franchise and customer base, along with a history of consistent growth, the recent trends in terms of growth and valuation have not been aligned for them.

The Q2 FY27 results provide a more recent view of both banks' performance. HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank reported their quarterly financial results, offering an update on profitability, loan growth and margins. Their latest figures should be compared across net profit, net interest income (NII), net interest margin (NIM) and advances to assess whether ICICI Bank continues to maintain its profitability advantage while HDFC Bank benefits from its larger balance sheet.

Business Models Compared: Where the Revenue Actually Comes From

The difference between HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank is their drivers of growth. They both work in retail, corporate, SME and digital banking, but have their unique business capabilities.

HDFC Bank: Deposits Dominance and Emphasis on Retail Banking

The main strength of HDFC Bank is its deposits franchise, including a well-developed CASA franchise that allows HDFC to have low funding costs and lend more.

In June 2026, total deposits of the bank amounted to about ₹31.71 lakh crore. Lending includes loans to individuals, home financing, vehicle financing, credit cards, SME and corporate banking.

This was achieved in 2023 through the merger of the company with HDFC Ltd that came with a huge mortgage book. The objective of this move continues to be the conversion of the balance sheet into margins and returns.

ICICI Bank: Balanced Lending and Consistent Execution

There has been a restructuring of ICICI Bank’s business strategy as it has reduced exposure to corporate lending and maintained a diversified loan portfolio in retail, small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and business banking.

As of June 2026, the bank has total advances of ₹16.31 lakh crore, up by 19.6% YoY. Retail loans constituted 49.2% of the loan portfolio, whereas Business Banking increased 28.2% YoY.

Its financial services ecosystem across insurance, asset management and investments further supports cross-selling opportunities.

Financials Head-to-Head: Revenue, PAT, Margin and Growth

The financial performance differentiates between the two banks. HDFC Bank is superior in terms of size and earning capacity, whereas ICICI Bank is superior in profitability ratios.

HDFC Bank is valued at a P/B ratio of 1.9x since investors keep analysing the effect of the HDFC Ltd merger on margins and return ratios. Nevertheless, the controlled asset quality of the bank, with a net NPA at 0.41% and the franchise strength make investors feel comfortable.

ICICI Bank commands a P/B valuation of around 2.7, supported by its profitability metrics. The bank reported a net interest margin of 4.36% and a net NPA of 0.35%, reflecting its operating efficiency and asset quality.

The valuation gap highlights the current market perception: HDFC Bank offers valuation comfort and a potential re-rating opportunity, while ICICI Bank commands a premium for profitability and execution. The sustainability of this gap will depend on future improvement in margins, growth and return ratios.

    Balance Sheet Strength and Leverage

Balance sheet health is an important indicator for assessing the stability of banking stocks. The asset quality, capital position and provisioning ability of a bank help it to sustain itself during credit cycles.

HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank both possess healthy balance sheets, but each has its own unique qualities. HDFC Bank has always been able to keep a clean record of its asset quality, while ICICI Bank has demonstrated a recovery due to improved risk management policies.

Technical Picture: Which Chart Looks Good Right Now

    HDFC Bank Limited

    HDFC_ICICI

HDFC Bank share price continues to experience selling pressure after its correction from its all-time high, having traded below its 50 EMA, signalling lower momentum in the short term. The share price is moving towards an important support level around the two-year lows at ₹680–700, where buying interest can arise. For HDFC Bank to signal a reversal, it will need to trade above its 50 EMA.

    2. ICICI Bank Limited

    HDFC_ICICI

The technical structure of ICICI Bank still appears still appears more favourable than HDFC Bank because the share price continues to trade above its 50 EMA, signalling buying pressure. The share price is close to its lifetime resistance zone of ₹1,500, which is a crucial resistance level. Any move above this zone will signal more upside, reaching a new all-time high.

HDFC Bank continues to have more foreign institutional ownership, reflecting its status as one of India's most widely held popular banking stocks. The bank's large size, liquidity and long-term track record make it a core holding for global investors.

ICICI Bank is more highly held by domestic institutions, having a DII stake above 42%. The rising confidence in the profitability and performance of ICICI Bank is the reason behind this.

In general, both the banks are favoured by institutions. HDFC Bank is favoured for its stability and size, whereas ICICI Bank is favoured more because of its current operations.

HDFC Bank vs ICICI Bank: Scorecard Across 10 Parameters

It can be seen that neither bank is dominant in every category. ICICI Bank is more favourable when it comes to loans, profitability, margins and institutional favouritism, whereas HDFC Bank is more favourable in terms of deposits, capital, valuation and retail banking scale.

Historically, HDFC Bank used to command a premium on account of consistency and execution, but improvements by ICICI Bank in asset quality and profitability have made the valuation gap much closer. For investors who want more current earnings momentum, ICICI Bank is their bet, while HDFC Bank provides the valuation story with upside from mergers.

Which is More Suitable Buy for 3-Year Horizon

For a three-year investment horizon, ICICI Bank remains an attractive option for investors prioritising profitability and growth. In Q2 FY27, its net interest margin stood at 4.18%, higher than HDFC Bank’s 3.16%. ICICI Bank’s profit after tax grew 20.1% year-on-year to ₹14,843 crore, supported by growth in net interest income and core operating profit.

HDFC Bank, meanwhile, reported a net profit of ₹19,510 crore and net interest income growth of 9.7% year-on-year. Its larger loan book and deposit base provide scale, while its NIM remains lower than ICICI Bank’s. HDFC Bank’s gross NPA ratio improved to 1.11%, while ICICI Bank reported a gross NPA ratio of 1.20% and a lower net NPA ratio of 0.30%.

Overall, ICICI Bank may appeal more to investors seeking stronger earnings growth and higher margins, while HDFC Bank may suit those looking for exposure to a larger banking franchise with improving asset quality. The final choice should also account for the current valuation, since a stronger financial performance does not automatically make a stock the better buy at every price.
