Nifty traded around 22,720 during Tuesday afternoon, with options data showing a strong build-up of Put open interest below the spot price. The PCR stood at 1.63, while Max Pain moved up to 22,700. The 22,800 strike holds the highest Call OI near the market, making it an important resistance, while 22,700 and 22,600 remain key support zones for the weekly expiry.
The Nifty 50 was trading around the 22,720-22,725 zone on Tuesday afternoon, after recovering from the lower levels seen during the first half of the session. Intraday price movement shows the index gradually moving higher from around the 22,570 region and attempting to hold above the 22,700 mark.
With the weekly expiry underway, option positioning has also strengthened around the current market price. The Put side continues to carry substantially higher open interest than the Call side, while Max Pain has moved closer to the prevailing spot price.
The Nifty Put-Call Ratio stood at 1.6251, with total Put OI at around 4,257.42 lakh contracts, compared with total Call OI of around 2,619.76 lakh contracts.
A PCR above 1 indicates higher Put open interest compared with Calls, which generally reflects stronger positioning on the support side. The intraday PCR trend has also moved higher, rising from below 1 during the opening phase to above 1.60 by the afternoon.
However, a high PCR should not be viewed in isolation as a bullish signal. With expiry-related positions changing quickly, the behaviour of option writers around nearby strikes will remain important in the second half.
On the Call side, the 22,800 strike carries the highest open interest among the nearby strikes, making it the most visible hurdle for Nifty during the expiry session.
Fresh Call additions are also visible between 22,700 and 22,800, suggesting that option writers are actively positioning around this zone. Such resistance could restrict the upside unless the index manages to move decisively above 22,800.
A sustained move above 22,800 could force some Call writers to unwind their positions and may open the door for an extension towards the 22,900-23,000 zone. Until then, 22,800 remains the level that traders are likely to watch closely.
On the Put side, sizeable open interest is visible at 22,700, while the strongest Put OI concentration is placed at the 22,600 strike.
Fresh Put writing is particularly strong around 22,600-22,700, indicating that option writers are attempting to build a support base below the prevailing market price.
The 22,700 level is also significant because Max Pain currently stands at 22,700. The Max Pain level moved higher during the session, broadly following the recovery in the index.
As long as Nifty manages to stay above 22,700, the immediate expiry structure remains supportive. A slip below this mark, however, could bring 22,600 back into focus, where the largest Put OI base is currently positioned.
The option structure currently points to 22,700-22,800 as the immediate expiry battleground.
The rising PCR of 1.63, strong Put writing below the spot price, and Max Pain at 22,700 provide support for the lower end of this range. At the same time, the sizeable Call OI at 22,800 may keep the upside capped unless buyers manage to push the index firmly beyond this strike.
A sustained move above 22,800 could improve momentum and trigger Call short covering, with 22,900 emerging as the next level to watch. On the other hand, if Nifty slips below 22,700, selling pressure could increase, and the index may retest the stronger Put base around 22,600.
For the remainder of the weekly expiry session, 22,700 remains the immediate support, while 22,800 is the crucial resistance that could decide whether the afternoon recovery extends further.
The Nifty 50 is trading close to the 22,650 mark on Tuesday, the weekly expiry day, as option traders build sizeable positions around the prevailing market level.
At around 10:30 AM, Nifty was trading near 22,648.75. Interestingly, the Max Pain level is also placed at 22,650, putting the index almost exactly at the level where option writers currently face the least aggregate payout.
The derivatives setup, however, is considerably different from a Call-heavy expiry structure. Total Put open interest stands at around 3,761.08 lakh contracts, compared with Call open interest of nearly 2,705.15 lakh contracts. This has pushed the Put-Call Ratio (PCR) to 1.3943, suggesting that Put positions currently outweigh Calls.
Fresh positioning also remains tilted towards the Put side, with Put OI additions exceeding Call additions during the session.
The Nifty PCR currently stands at 1.39, comfortably above the neutral level of 1.
The intraday PCR chart shows the ratio rising steadily from below 1 during the opening phase to nearly 1.40 as the session progressed. At the same time, Nifty recovered from its early weakness and moved closer to the 22,650 zone.
A PCR above 1 generally indicates higher Put open interest relative to Calls. In the present setup, it points towards aggressive positioning by Put writers around lower and at-the-money strikes.
However, a high PCR by itself should not be treated as a directional signal. On expiry day, the behaviour of writers around key strikes becomes more important, particularly if the index starts moving sharply away from the 22,650 zone.
The 22,600 strike stands out clearly on the Put side.
It carries the highest Put open interest among the nearby strikes and has also witnessed the strongest fresh Put additions during the session. This makes 22,600 an important immediate support level for the weekly expiry.
Strong Put positioning is also visible around 22,500 and 22,550, creating a broader support zone below the market.
The Change OI chart further strengthens this reading. Fresh Put writing is particularly strong around 22,500, 22,550, 22,600 and 22,650, suggesting that option sellers are attempting to build a floor beneath the index.
As long as Nifty holds above 22,600, Put writers are likely to remain comfortable. A decisive fall below this level, however, could trigger Put unwinding and increase intraday volatility.
While Put writers are defending the downside, the Call side indicates that the index may face resistance once it moves above the prevailing market level.
Call OI begins to rise meaningfully around 22,650 and 22,700, with sizeable positions also visible at 22,800, 22,900 and 23,000.
Among the nearby strikes, 22,700 carries significant Call open interest as well as fresh Call additions, making the 22,650–22,700 region the first hurdle for the index.
The Change OI data shows fresh Call writing expanding from 22,600 onwards, particularly around the 22,650–22,800 zone.
Therefore, while Put writers appear to be providing support below 22,600, Call writers are simultaneously attempting to limit the index above 22,700.
A sustained move beyond 22,700 could disturb this positioning and force some Call writers to cover their positions, potentially opening the way for a sharper intraday move.
The Max Pain level for the weekly expiry stands at 22,650, almost identical to the Nifty spot level of 22,648.75.
The intraday Max Pain chart shows that this level moved higher during the morning session before settling near 22,650.
With the spot price hovering around Max Pain, the derivatives setup currently points to an equilibrium between buyers and sellers at this strike.
This becomes particularly relevant on expiry day because large open positions accumulated around nearby strikes can keep the index confined to a narrow range for part of the session.
However, this balance can change quickly if either the 22,600 support or the 22,700 resistance is breached decisively.
The current derivatives structure suggests a 22,600–22,700 battle zone for Nifty during Tuesday's weekly expiry.
On the downside, 22,600 is the immediate support, backed by the strongest Put open interest and substantial fresh Put writing. Below this level, the 22,550–22,500 zone becomes the next important support area.
On the upside, 22,650–22,700 is the immediate resistance band, where Call writers have started building positions. A sustained move above 22,700 could lead to Call short covering and allow the index to move towards higher strikes.
With PCR at 1.39 and Max Pain positioned at 22,650, the options data currently carries a mildly supportive undertone, but the index remains caught between strong Put writing below and Call buildup above.
For expiry traders, 22,600 and 22,700 are the two levels to watch closely. Holding above 22,600 keeps the recovery structure intact, while a clean breakout above 22,700 could shift the intraday setup further in favour of the bulls. Conversely, a break below 22,600 may weaken the support created by Put writers and increase the possibility of a move towards 22,550–22,500.
