Indian benchmark indices witnessed high volatility on the Nifty weekly expiry session and ended the day on a negative note. Weak global cues, along with escalating tensions in the Middle East, keeping overall investor sentiment subdued.

At the close, the Sensex declined 251.61 points, or 0.33%, to settle at 77,017.79. The Nifty 50 slipped 86.50 points, or 0.36%, closing at 24,032.80.

The Nifty Midcap 100 index advanced 0.17% to close at 60,264.50. On the other hand, the Nifty Smallcap 100 index outperformed with gains of 0.28%, ending the session at 18,182.40. Banking stocks remained under pressure, with Bank Nifty declining 0.60% to 54,547.05.

From a volatility perspective, India VIX declined 2.14% to 17.91, indicating relatively lower volatility expectations despite the choppy session. On the currency front, the USD INR pair rose 0.23% to close at 95.28.

On the sectoral front, selective buying was seen in Nifty FMCG, Auto, and Pharma stocks, which managed to hold a marginally positive bias. On the flip side, selling pressure was evident in Nifty Realty, private and PSU banking stocks, Consumer Durables, and Oil & Gas, which emerged as key laggards.

In stock-specific action, M&M was the top gainer, rising 3.68%. On the losing side, ICICI Bank declined 1.57%.
