US–India Trade Deal News Today

U.S. President Donald Trump announced a trade arrangement with India under which U.S. tariffs on Indian goods will be reduced to 18%. The announcement followed a call with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, according to a Reuters report.

Meanwhile, according to Reuters, a White House official said that Washington is willing to drop the additional 25% tariff slapped onto New Delhi over Russian oil.

"We are also dropping ‌the ‍25% tariff given ‍India's agreement to stop buying Russian ‌oil," the official said, according to the news agency.

The announcement did not specify timelines or implementation details for the tariff changes or energy commitments.

Tariff Revision and Energy Trade Commitments

The United States reduced the reciprocal tariff on imports from India to 18% from 25%, following a phone conversation between U.S. President Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

In a social media post, President Trump stated that the tariff reduction would take effect immediately as part of a trade arrangement between the two countries. He added that India had agreed to move forward with lowering its own tariffs and non-tariff barriers on U.S. goods to zero.

The U.S. President also said that India had committed to ending purchases of Russian oil and increasing energy imports from the United States, with potential purchases from Venezuela as well.

Prime Minister Modi welcomed the tariff reduction, describing it as supportive for Indian industry and exporters.

“Wonderful to speak with my dear friend President Trump today,” he wrote, adding that Made in India products would now attract a reduced tariff of 18%. Modi thanked Trump “on behalf of the 1.4 billion people of India for this wonderful announcement,” he wrote on X.
