As quoted in the press release of Power Grid (NSE Exchange Filings), the company has won the bid for the Tariff-Based Competitive Bidding (TBCB) for the development of an interstate transmission system. This project is named "Strengthening of Transmission System to Integrate Additional Renewable Energy Potential at Davanagere (0.25 GW) and at Bellary (2.75 GW)." The implementation will be done via a Build-Own-Operate-Transfer (BOOT) mechanism. The Letter of Intent (LoI) was issued to POWERGRID on 08 Jan 2026.

POWERGRID won the bid to build transmission infrastructure integrating about 3 GW of renewable energy potential in Karnataka.
The project includes a 400 kV double-circuit transmission line across the state.
Associated works include line bays at both ends and augmentation at Davanagere and Bellary pooling stations.
The project will be developed by POWERGRID on a BOOT model.

Karnataka’s transmission project intends to increase grid connectivity for currently installed and increasing amounts of renewable energy produced within the state. This transmission line will be a double circuit 400 kV transmission line that will be constructed through some of the main districts of Karnataka. The project will enable the delivery of renewable energy produced in Davanagere and Bellary via a new, high-capacity transmission line, allowing power to be transmitted to multiple states across the interstate grid. In addition to constructing this new high-capacity transmission line, POWERGRID will also provide new transformers and upgrade line bays within all necessary collection/pooling stations to achieve this goal.
This type of transmission infrastructure provides a vital link between generation centres and load centres. As such, with the increased growth of renewable generation, improving the current transmission network will enable operators to reduce congestion and improve the efficiency of power flow to and from renewable generators.
In the BOOT model, once the successful bidder is selected, it is the responsibility of the successful bidder to finance, design, build and operate the asset until such time as it is transferred. The BOOT model provides a level of long-term risk and responsibility to the successful bidder (the developer) over the term of the concession (the length of time they are responsible).
As far as POWERGRID is concerned, this means that POWERGRID will oversee the entire life cycle of the project before the asset is transferred to the owner, in compliance with the contractual terms.
Over the past several years, India's transmission industry has increasingly adopted competitive bidding processes to distribute large, complex infrastructure contracts, enabling developers to have more efficient means of contracting with them and more equitable chances of obtaining contracts.
One part of the larger initiative to upgrade and expand transmission capability is the Karnataka Transmission Project; this project will contribute to the fulfilment of the State's renewable energy objectives while providing a reliable transmission system for this growing sector.
As renewable energy is proliferating throughout many of the States, investments in transmission are a top priority for most States. Interconnecting high-voltage transmission lines between disparate generation facilities will allow for greater flexibility in integrating renewable wind and solar energy into those growing markets, such as Karnataka.
