Mutual funds added 5.33 lakh new investors in Q1 FY27, the lowest in five years. New additions fell 47.7% YoY after dropping 55.2% in Q1 FY26. The slowdown comes after a strong rise in mutual fund participation since 2021.
The mutual fund industry had a slow start to the new financial year. New investor additions fell to a five-year low during the April to June quarter of FY27, according to industry data.
Mutual funds added 5.33 lakh new investors in the first quarter of FY27. This was 47.7% lower than the 10.20 lakh investors added during the same period a year earlier.
The decline in new investor additions has now continued for two years. The industry added 22.79 lakh new investors in the first quarter of FY25. This was the highest addition recorded during the five-year period.
However, the pace changed sharply in the following year. New investor additions fell to 10.20 lakh in Q1 FY26, marking a fall of 55.2% YoY.
The slowdown became steeper in Q1 FY27. In Q1 FY27, only 5.33 lakh new investors were added, a decrease of 47.7% YoY. This shows that the number of new investors added during the quarter declined sharply by 77% from 22.79 lakh, which was the peak in Q1 FY25.
Year | New Investors Added (April to June) | Increase / Decrease (in %) |
FY 2022-23 | 16,33,850 | - |
FY 2023-24 | 6,63,993 | -59.40 |
FY 2024-25 | 22,78,670 | 243.20 |
FY 2025-26 | 10,19,975 | -55.20 |
FY 2026-27 | 5,33,251 | -47.70 |
Mutual funds have become a popular investment option in the last few years. Since 2021, many retail investors have started investing through mutual funds. Hence, one reason for the decline could be that many retail investors had already entered mutual funds by 2025.
Furthermore, the markets become challenging in 2026. The FIIs are still withdrawing money, while high crude oil prices, interest rate concerns and geopolitical issues have made the market volatile.
This uncertain market situation might make new investors rethink their investment decision. In addition, some investors may want to wait for the market to stabilise.
