According to a press release uploaded on NSE, Microsoft Corp. has announced a $17.5 billion investment in India, to be spread over four years, with the focus on AI and cloud computing. The news was shared by CEO Satya Nadella after he met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi. Microsoft stated that the plan rests on the foundation of three pillars: scale, skills, and sovereignty.

A major proportion of the investment will go to creating a new digital infrastructure. Microsoft will create a large hyperscale cloud region in Hyderabad. It is set to commence operations in mid-2026, the company said, making this the biggest cloud setup for Microsoft in India. Another project under consideration is to enlarge AI training programmes in support of India's constellation of engineers and developers. Building systems that allow India to handle as well as protect sensitive data within the country is also a priority.

With a population of 1.45 billion, the country has an engaged ecosystem of engineers specialising in AI, machine learning, and data science, which has stimulated interest among global tech leaders. Anthropic co-founder Dario Amodei was in India in October. Expected in the coming months are Nvidia's Jensen Huang and Google DeepMind's Demis Hassabis. Recently, Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan and Cognisant CEO Ravi Kumar met with Modi.

Microsoft's investment in India follows similar plans for other regions. It pledged $10 billion in Portugal for an AI data centre. It announced $7.9 billion for projects in the United Arab Emirates. In the U.K., it announced a commitment of another $30 billion for AI and cloud expansion. Microsoft expects its total capex to be at $97.5 billion by 2026.

On this trip, Nadella will also tour Bangalore and Mumbai. In January, he announced a separate $3 billion commitment to India over two years.
