Indian equity benchmarks ended significantly lower on March 23, with the Nifty closing marginally above the 22,500 mark amid broad-based selling pressure.

Domestic markets remained under pressure, tracking weakness across Asian peers. Sentiment was further weighed down by rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and concerns over potential disruptions to global energy supplies.

Investor caution intensified following U.S. President Donald Trump’s 48-hour ultimatum to Iran regarding the Strait of Hormuz.

At the close:

The Sensex declined by 1,836.57 points, or 2.46%, to settle at 72,696.39

The Nifty fell by 601.85 points, or 2.60%, ending at 22,512.65

Sectoral Performance

The decline was broad-based, with all sectoral indices ending in the red.

Top losers: Realty, Capital Goods, Consumer Durables, Metals, Telecom, and PSU Banks declined between 4% to 5%

Other sectors: Auto, Energy, Media, Private Banks, and Oil & Gas indices slipped by around 3%

Broader Markets

Broader markets mirrored the weakness:

Nifty Midcap index corrected nearly 4%

Smallcap index also declined करीब 4%

Stock Highlights

Among individual stocks:

HCL Tech was among the top performers, gaining around +1.75%

Titan plunged more than -6.43%
