The Indian benchmark indices ended sharply lower on May 12, 2026, amid weekly expiry volatility, a steep rise in crude oil prices, persistent weakness in the Indian Rupee, and continued Foreign Institutional Investor (FII) selling pressure. These factors combined to weigh heavily on overall investor sentiment.
The Sensex dropped by 1,456 points, or 1.92%, closing at 74,559.24. The Nifty fell by 436.30 points, or 1.83%, settling at 23,379.55. The Bank Nifty dropped by 884.70 points, or 1.63%, closing at 53,555.20, contributing to the overall market weakness.
Selling pressure remained broad-based across sectors, with no major sector managing to close in the green. Nifty Realty emerged as the top loser, followed by IT and Consumer Durables, with these indices correcting between 2% and 5%.
The broader market witnessed a correction, with widespread risk aversion observed in frontline indices. The Nifty Midcap 100 index dropped 2.54% to close at 59,704.65. Meanwhile, the Nifty Smallcap 100 index saw a 3.17% decline to close at 17,939.
In terms of individual stock performance, ONGC emerged as the top gainer, rising by 4.70%, while ADANIPORTS was the top loser, falling by 4.32%.
The Indian Rupee closed at 95.55, up by 0.35, or 0.36%, against the US Dollar. Meanwhile, the India VIX surged by 0.7275 points, closing at 19.28, a rise of 3.92%, signaling heightened market volatility.
