Indian markets declined for the third straight session on March 13 as weak global cues and foreign fund outflows weighed on sentiment. Sensex and Nifty fell over two percent, the rupee hit a record low, and midcap and smallcap indices also closed lower.

 Indian equity markets continued to face pressure on 13 March, marking the 3rd consecutive session of losses. Weak global cues and continued foreign fund outflows weighed on investor sentiment. At the same time, Brent crude hovering near $100 per barrel amid the ongoing West Asia conflict added to concerns in the market.

Benchmark Indices Performance

Benchmark indices ended the day sharply lower.

By the close of the session:

The Sensex declined 1,470.50 points, or 1.93%, to settle at 74,563.92.

The Nifty fell 488.05 points, or 2.06%, to close at 23,151.10.

The persistent decline reflected cautious sentiment among investors amid global uncertainties and capital outflows.

Currency Movement

The Indian rupee weakened for the 2nd consecutive week, settling at a record low of 92.45 against the U.S. dollar. Ongoing geopolitical tensions continued to put pressure on the domestic currency.

Sectoral Performance

Sector-wise, all major indices ended in negative territory during the session.

The sharpest declines were seen in:

Auto

PSU Banks

Metals

Media

Each of these sectors dropped between 3% and 4%, indicating broad-based weakness across the market.

Broader Market Trend

The broader market also remained under pressure.

Both the Nifty Midcap index and the Nifty Smallcap index declined by around 2.5% each, reflecting selling across mid-sized and smaller companies as well.

Key Stock Movers

Among individual stocks, Tata Consumer was one of the top performers of the session, gaining around 2.29%.

On the other hand, LT recorded the steepest decline among major stocks, falling 7.38% during the day.
