Apple Overtakes Nvidia to Become World's Most Valuable Company Again

By Dalal Street Investment Journal (DSIJ)

    Summary :

Apple has become the world's most valuable listed company after overtaking Nvidia. Apple shares gained 1.17% on Monday, while Nvidia fell nearly 5%. Investors are now focused on Apple's upcoming earnings, which will mark Tim Cook's final earnings call as the company's CEO.

Apple Tops Global Market Cap Rankings

Apple has once again claimed the top spot after its shares touched a fresh record high on the Nasdaq on July 27. The rally pushed the iPhone maker's market capitalisation to overtake Nvidia's market capitalisation again.

Apple Gains 1.17% while Nvidia Falls ~5%

Apple's share price ended the session at $336.91, up 1.17%, while Nvidia's share price closed at $196.51, down nearly 5%. Alphabet remained the third most valuable listed company in the world.

    Apple vs Nvidia in 2026

The race between Apple and Nvidia has remained close throughout the year. On July 17, Apple had also overtaken Nvidia after its market capitalisation climbed to nearly $4.9 trillion, compared with Nvidia's $4.86 trillion. Nvidia later regained the lead before Apple returned to the top again following Monday's rally.

The frequent changes at the top show how closely matched the two technology giants have become. Investors continue to reassess which company is better placed to benefit from the next phase of AI-led growth.

Interestingly, the combined market capitalisation of Apple and Nvidia is now larger than the gross domestic product of every country except the United States and China. That highlights the extraordinary scale these two companies have achieved.

Apple Stock Gains ~75% in One Year

Apple's latest milestone comes after a strong run in its share price. The stock has gained 74.14% over the past one year and is up more than 22% so far in 2026. It has also outperformed most of the Magnificent Seven technology companies during the year.

This comes despite concerns over slower iPhone demand in some regions and rising competition in artificial intelligence.

Nvidia Falls ~5% on Monday, July 27

While Apple moved higher, Nvidia shares fell nearly 5% on Monday, dragging the broader semiconductor sector lower. The decline reduced Nvidia's market capitalisation to around ₹456.452 trillion, making it the world's second most valuable listed company.

Even after Monday's decline, Nvidia remains one of the biggest beneficiaries of the AI spending cycle.

Tim Cook's Final Earnings Call as CEO

The upcoming earnings announcement on Thursday carries added significance for Apple.

It will be Tim Cook's final earnings call as Apple's Chief Executive Officer before he steps down on September 1 to become Executive Chairman. The leadership transition will see John Ternus, the company's long-time hardware engineering chief, take over as CEO.

Hence, investors are expected to pay close attention to Cook's comments on Apple's long-term strategy and future growth plans. Updates on iPhone demand, the rollout of Apple Intelligence and the company's outlook for the coming quarters will be closely watched by investors. Market participants may also monitor comments on services revenue, sales in China, gross margins and capital expenditure.
