Airlines To Save ₹400 Crore Under New Relief Measures

Synopsis:

Amid the West Asia crisis, the Government has announced fresh relief for domestic airlines by cutting landing and parking charges by 25% for three months. The move comes after capping the ATF price hike for domestic operations. These measures are expected to save airlines around ₹400 crore. The key question now is whether passengers will see lower domestic airfares.

The ongoing West Asia crisis has created an unprecedented situation for global aviation, and Indian carriers have not remained untouched. Even so, the domestic aviation sector in India has continued to show resilience, helped by timely and calibrated support from the Government.

The Ministry of Civil Aviation has been closely monitoring the evolving situation and has introduced a series of measures to ease the burden on domestic airlines. Earlier, the Government had already decided to pass on only a partial increase in Aviation Turbine Fuel prices, capping the hike for domestic carriers at 25% for domestic operations. This came at a time when the sharp jump in crude oil prices globally had triggered a much steeper rise in ATF prices.

Partial ATF Hike Limits Cost Pressure

The decision to moderate the ATF price increase was aimed at helping airlines manage rising operating costs without allowing the burden to be fully transferred to passengers. The broader objective was to ensure that air travel in India remains affordable despite the turbulence in global energy markets.

More Support for Airlines: 25% Reduction in Landing and Parking Charges

Now, in a further step to support the industry, the Ministry has announced a 25% reduction in landing and parking charges for domestic carriers for a period of three months. The move forms part of a wider response designed to stabilise airline operations during a period of heightened uncertainty.

Minister outlines government approach

Speaking about the announcement, Minister of Civil Aviation, Shri Ram Mohan Naidu, expressed, “Under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, the primary focus of the Government in the aviation sector has been to make flying a more affordable and convenient travel option for passengers. Even in the prevailing challenging situation, when global air operations are impacted, we have ensured that cancellations and rising fuel costs do not severely affect the operations of our domestic carriers. While ATF costs globally have risen by more than 100%, we have passed on only a moderated increase capped at 25%.”

Talking further about the interventions, the Minister said “Now, with the ultimate aim of supporting airlines and, in turn, passengers, airfare increases are being further contained by reducing landing and parking charges levied by airport operators. This step is part of the Ministry’s overall effort to keep the aviation sector stable during this volatile period and to ensure ease of flying for passengers. This is a significant intervention to provide relief to airlines grappling with increasing operational costs. We are in constant touch with all stakeholders, including airlines, airport operators, and the Airports Economic Regulatory Authority of India (AERA), in this regard.”

AERA, AAI Implement Relief Measures

To implement the decision, the Ministry has directed the Airports Economic Regulatory Authority of India to reduce landing and parking charges by 25% from the prevailing tariff at all major airports under its jurisdiction. The reduction has come into immediate effect for all domestic flights and will remain in force for three months.

AERA has also clarified that any under recovery faced by individual airports will be adjusted during tariff determination in the next five year control period.

Similarly, the Airports Authority of India has been instructed to reduce landing and parking charges by 25% at all its non major airports for domestic flights. This relief too will remain applicable for three months.

Relief for Airlines, Stability for Passengers

These measures are expected to lower the landing and parking charge burden on airlines at major airports by nearly ₹400 crore over the three month period. That is a meaningful relief at a time when carriers are dealing with rising fuel costs and operational uncertainty.

The larger message from the Ministry is clear. The Government wants to ensure that domestic aviation remains stable, viable, and accessible despite the external shock created by the West Asia crisis. As the situation continues to evolve, the Ministry has indicated that it will remain watchful and take further measures if required to support airline operations and protect affordable air travel for passengers.
