The United States is home to the two stock exchanges - the Nasdaq and the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). These are the two broadly popular stock exchanges not only the largest exchanges within the US but also across the world.
Popular US Indices | Associated Stock Exchange |
Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) | NYSE |
S&P 500 | NYSE |
Nasdaq Composite | Nasdaq |
The market timings of top US stock exchanges as per Indian Standard Time (IST) are mentioned below.
Stock Exchanges | Open (as per IST) | Close (as per IST) |
NYSE | 7 PM | 1:30 AM |
Nasdaq | 7 PM | 1:30 AM |
The operational hours of both exchanges, NYSE and Nasdaq are similar. However, like Indian markets, the US stock exchanges have pre-market trading hours, normal trading hours, and after-market trading hours.
Following is the division between three different sessions as per IST.
Session | NYSE (as per IST) | Nasdaq (as per IST) |
Pre-market Trading Session | 1:30 PM to 7 PM | 1:30 PM to 7 PM |
Regular Trading Hours | 7 PM to 1:30 AM | 7 PM to 1:30 AM |
After-market Trading Session | 1:30 AM to 5:30 AM | 1:30 AM to 5:30 AM |
Daylight saving time (DST) is followed in the US during the summers when the days are longer than usual. DST starts on the second Sunday of March and goes on until the first Sunday of November. As per this practice, the clock time is moved one hour later.
Subsequently, the timings of the US stock markets as per IST also change. When the US follows DST, Nasdaq and NYSE opening time shifts from 7 PM IST to 8 PM IST and closing time shifts from 1:30 AM IST to 2:30 AM IST.
The following table demonstrates a change in the opening and closing time of NYSE and Nasdaq based on Daylight Saving Time.
Exchange | Without DST | With DST
Open (as per IST) | Close (as per IST) | Open (as per IST) | Close (as per IST)
NYSE | 7 PM | 1:30 AM | 8 PM | 2:30 AM |
Nasdaq | 7 PM | 1:30 AM | 8 PM | 2:30 AM |
Like Indian markets, the US stock markets are open from Monday to Friday and remain closed on Saturdays, Sundays and US holidays. To get more details, visit NYSE or Nasdaq’s official website and find the exact days when the exchanges will remain closed.
