As quoted in the press release of InterGlobe Aviation (NSE Exchange Filings), IndiGo’s parent company is continuing to face operational difficulties as a result of disruptions that have lasted for two days. The airline has reported that technology problems, weather-related issues, high levels of air traffic congestion, and changes in crew roster regulations have placed significant strain on its network and negatively affected many parts of the airline. Given that IndiGo accounts for more than half of India’s domestic air travel, this situation has drawn significant industry attention.

IndiGo has also implemented an interim schedule adjustment plan designed to aid the airline in returning to stable operations. The adjustments are to be in effect for a period of 48 hours as IndiGo continues to work towards normal network performance levels and providing alternative accommodations to impacted customers.

Key Takeaways

  • IndiGo faced extensive delays and cancellations over two days due to technology glitches, winter-season scheduling changes, weather interruptions, and congestion across major airports.

  • Revised crew-rostering norms under Flight Duty Time Limitations added further operational constraints.

  • More than 150 flights were cancelled, with delays reported across major hubs including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad.

  • The airline has introduced calibrated schedule adjustments for 48 hours to aid recovery.

  • Passengers have been advised to check updated flight statuses before travelling.

Disruptions Deepen Across IndiGo’s Network

The company has acknowledged that unanticipated operational difficulties have disrupted its full-system operations and flight schedules across the system, resulting in cancellations and severe delays to its network.

The combination of minor technology issues and the changes to its winter-season flight schedule coincided with adverse weather conditions, combined with increased airport congestion, which created additional operational stress on the system that the airline could not have predicted beforehand.

Additionally, the introduction of new crew-rostering regulations has created additional restrictions on the number of flight and cabin crew available. These crew-rostering regulations are in accordance with existing Flight Duty Time Limitations; therefore, they improve the crew's safety and well-being, but at the same time, they have impacted scheduling flexibility on a temporary basis.

To manage these issues, the airline has implemented a controlled schedule adjustment plan whereby the focus will be on lowering system loads, and allowing for a gradual return to full operations over time so that the network will be sustainable in the days to come.

Industry Context

During Winter months fog causes a lot of issues with reduced visibility in addition to increased levels of traffic and very compressed schedules which all combine to create a high amount of pressure on the aviation industry. If a carrier operates a significantly large domestic network, that same carrier may experience multiple systems operating under constraints at the same time.

According to IndiGo's statement, passenger support teams are working 24 hours a day to help alleviate the impact of delays by providing passengers with alternative travel options and/or refunds where appropriate. IndiGo urges passengers to always check their flight status on IndiGo's official platform prior to heading to the airport.
