Settlement or clearing holidays work a bit differently from regular market holidays. Trading can still take place, but the actual settlement—when shares and funds move between accounts—gets pushed ahead since banks and depositories aren’t operating.
Checking the settlement holiday list for 2026 can help you stay clear on when your shares will actually be delivered to your demat account. It makes planning easier, especially if you’re trading around holidays or waiting for a settlement on a specific date.

A settlement holiday is a day when trading may continue, but settlement does not take place. This happens because banks, clearing corporations (like NSCCL or ICCL), or depositories such as NSDL and CDSL are closed. As a result, the transfer of funds and securities is delayed to the next working day.
So even though trades happen as usual, the final step gets delayed. Shares or funds might show up a day later than expected instead of following the normal schedule.

A settlement holiday is a day when trading continues, but the settlement part is put on hold. Since banks or depositories aren’t operational, the transfer of shares or funds happens on the next working day instead.
There isn’t much of a difference in how they’re used. Both terms generally refer to days when settlement is paused, even though trading is open. This change can shift the usual T+1 settlement cycle. Exchanges publish separate lists for these holidays each year.
