What are sovereign bonds?

Sovereign bonds are debt securities issued by a national government to finance its expenditures. These bonds are backed by the full credit and taxing power of the issuing government, making them one of the safest investment options. Sovereign bonds are typically denominated in the local currency, but some governments also issue them in foreign currencies, such as the US dollar.

Examples of sovereign bonds include:

  1. Treasury Bonds (T-Bonds) in the United States
  2. Government of India Bonds in India
  3. Gilts in the United Kingdom
