Retail inflation in India fell to 2.82% in May, reaching a 75-month low. This marks the fourth straight month below 4%, with food and fuel prices contributing to the decline, according to official data from the Ministry of Statistics.
Retail inflation in India, based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI), has eased to a 75-month low at a level of 2.82% in May 2025, as per the declared data from the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation. CPI inflation has thus presided for the fourth month below 4%.

The calming of inflation has been supported by stable food prices and a decline in the fuel category and light. Food inflation recorded 3.96% on an annual basis in May and was unchanged from April. The index for fuel and light showed a decline of 2.6% over a year. Prices of vegetables increased marginally while various cereals and pulses remained steadier.

Overall, CPI in May showed a 0.51% increase from the previous month as per the normal seasonal trend. Urban inflation was at 3.41%, while rural inflation stood at 2.44%, lower than urban rates, indicating wider-based benefits across geographies. Core inflation, which excludes food and fuel, remained stable for the month as well.
Retail inflation was recorded at 4.85% in March, dropping down to 4.83% in April, thus continuing its downward path. The May figure is the lowest since September 2016.
According to the Ministry, the inflation data recognize current market trends across essential commodities and services much in line with the overall economic indicators released during the last quarter.
