Vikas Ecotech Limited has gone through several iterations in the over forty years since it was formed. Incorporated in 1984 as Vikas Leasing Limited, the company originally focused on financial services before shifting to chemicals. The company's name has changed three times, becoming Vikas Profin Limited in 2002, then Vikas Globalone Limited in 2008, before adopting its current name of Vikas Ecotech Limited in 2015. Each change in naming represented a shift in the company's positioning as a specialty chemicals manufacturer.
Today's business operates in specialty chemical additives and polymer compounds. Manufacturing takes place at Shahjahanpur in Rajasthan along with other business activities for supplying the industries of plastics, rubber, footwear, and packaging. This development continues the company's evolution showing a very deliberate shift in focus from trading to integrated manufacturing while establishing relationships with larger global chemical players for market access.
The shift occurred in the late 90s. In 1998, the company began petroleum and petrochemical trading as an initial serious pathway into the energy-linked chemical value chain. This was the beginning of a more expensive chemicals portfolio. By 2008, Vikas Ecotech became a manufacturer of high-end compounds and additives. The backward integration associated with manufacturing was a bid to manage imported raw materials, improve margins, and define the company as more than a distributor.
Between 2008 and 2011, it built a much stronger industrial footprint with the commissioning of two industrial units in Jammu & Kashmir and one in Rajasthan, where there were incentives and subsidies—including logistics to raw material supplies. By this point, Vikas Ecotech had developed a hybrid approach, which consisted of some elements as a manufacturer of specialised products, and other elements of a distribution company for multinational chemical companies trying to get foothold into the Indian market, as it was a means of the company to diversify its revenue and to remain relevant in cyclical sectors such as rubber and plastic.
The company’s latest diversification can be viewed as a pivotal moment. In FY2023-24, Vikas Ecotech entered the energy sector, and this marks a move away from core chemicals. The firm was empanelled as an approved vendor to conduct business with the Uttar Pradesh State Horticulture Co-operative Marketing Federation (HOFED), which, because it is a government entity, indicates a government approved procurement channel. While the company's involvement in energy is still at an early stage, it does reveal the company's intention to pursue opportunities in potential energy-related projects, and potentially government-sponsored projects related to energy.
The company's journey from a leasing entity in the 1980s to a chemicals and energy-based manufacturer today demonstrates its ability to adapt the business model within the construct of the resources and limitations of the time. Each phase - financial services, petrochemical trading, specialty manufacturer, and more recently, energy - came about from the context of the company's era and market cycles. In the mind of investors who have tracked the stock over the years, they willingly acknowledge the number of pivots the company has made, while also recognising its trajectory into specialty products is a response to the rapidly growing demand for green chemical solutions that are customised to the unique characteristics of the Indian context.
Currently, Vikas Ecotech remains a small-cap company in the specialty chemicals industry. This earned character of Vikas Ecotech is centered on the value of customisation of its products and its business linkages in the industry, rather than its scale of operations. The Shahjahanpur facility is the core of its operations, while distribution partnerships with companies give the company market access to domestic and export customers. With more recently entering into the energy space, the company has increased its addressable market compared to previous eras, however execution and capital allocation should still be the most monitored aspects of the company going forward.
From leasing to chemicals, from trading to exports, and now into energy, the company’s trajectory has been shaped by reinvention. Currently, Vikas Ecotech's challenge is shoring up its position in specialty polymers while building a viable base in its new endeavors. Its future relevance will likely depend on managing the trade-off associated with diversification against constant profitability.
