India is expected to receive 108% of the Long Period Average (LPA) rainfall in June 2025, as per IMD. Central and southern regions will benefit most. Below-normal heatwaves are also expected, offering respite from intense summer conditions.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast that June 2025 will bring above-normal rainfall across much of the country, estimating precipitation at 108% of the Long Period Average (LPA). This projection forms part of the department’s second-stage long-range monsoon outlook and signals favourable conditions for agriculture and water management, especially in the early monsoon phase.

The monsoon core zone—covering Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Maharashtra, and nearby areas—is expected to receive significantly above-normal rainfall. Meanwhile, normal rainfall is projected for the northwestern belt, while the northeast and some southern areas may fall short.
The central and southern regions will likely see above-average downpours, contributing to improved crop cycles, reservoir levels, and rural incomes. However, higher rainfall could also pose challenges such as flooding and waterlogging, especially in urban centres.
Year | Rainfall (mm) | % of LPA |
2020 | 958 | 110% |
2021 | 870 | 100% |
2022 | 925 | 106% |
2023 | 820 | 94.4% |
2024 | 934.8 | 108% |
Forecast 2025 | N/A | 108% |
Alongside the rainfall prediction, IMD also indicated a reduction in the number of heatwave days for most of Northwest, Central, and East India. Monthly maximum temperatures are likely to be normal to below-normal in most parts of the country, except in specific zones of the Northwest and Northeast.
With rainfall in June 2025 forecast to reach 108% of the LPA, agricultural and water resource planning can gain a significant boost. At the same time, lower heatwave occurrences could provide relief to millions, signalling a relatively balanced and favourable start to the monsoon season.
