HAL will deliver six Tejas Mk-1A fighter aircraft to the Indian Air Force by March 2026. A Rs.48,000 crore order for 83 jets is underway. Another deal for 97 more jets worth Rs.67,000 crore is also in process.
Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) has confirmed that six Tejas Mk-1A Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) will be delivered to the Indian Air Force by March 2026. This announcement comes weeks after concerns were raised over delays in the delivery schedule of the indigenously developed fighter jets.
The Tejas Mk-1A, designed to replace ageing MiG-21 aircraft, plays a key role in India’s plan to strengthen its air combat fleet. The timely delivery of these jets is crucial not only for national security but also for boosting global confidence in India’s defence manufacturing capabilities.

HAL attributed earlier delays to engine supply disruptions from GE Aerospace, which had committed to deliver F404 engines by 2023. So far, only one engine has been received, with 12 more expected by the end of this fiscal year. This engine backlog had stalled the handover of already-built aircraft.
The production plan now includes delivery of six aircraft by March 2026, with a target of producing 16 jets in the following year—subject to timely engine availability.
HAL has become a central player in India's defence production roadmap. Below is a summary of its major current defence orders:
Programme | Quantity | Order Value (Rs.) | Delivery Timeline |
Tejas Mk-1A for IAF | 83 | 48,000 crore | In progress (till 2026) |
Additional Tejas Mk-1A (Planned) | 97 | 67,000 crore | Proposal stage |
LCH Prachand for Indian Military | 156 | 62,700 crore | Deliveries from 2028 |
The delivery of Tejas jets supports India’s push for indigenous defence production under the Make in India initiative. The aircraft comes equipped with modern radar systems, electronic warfare suites and advanced weaponry, positioning it as a multi-role platform suitable for various combat and reconnaissance operations.
The Indian Air Force currently operates with 31 fighter squadrons against a sanctioned strength of 42. Timely induction of Tejas Mk-1A will play a key role in narrowing this gap.
HAL has also confirmed ongoing discussions with several countries regarding the export of Tejas jets. While no specific details have been disclosed, international interest in the platform indicates the potential for future defence export growth.
In parallel, the company’s Rs.62,700 crore deal for Prachand light combat helicopters is progressing, with deliveries expected to begin in 2028. These indigenous helicopters are designed to operate at altitudes over 4,500 metres and are tailored for high-altitude warfare.
With key defence deals in motion and delivery schedules aligning, the HAL share price is likely to remain in investor focus. The confirmation of Tejas deliveries and new orders offers a long-term revenue pipeline and strengthens HAL’s position in India’s aerospace ecosystem.
The HAL share price has reflected steady interest amid growing government support for domestic defence firms. As deliveries begin and export possibilities unfold, the stock could gain more traction in the defence investment landscape.
