Closing Bell | Sensex logs 7th consecutive gain, up 521 points | Nifty ends above 24,300

The Sensex rose for the seventh straight session, closing 521 points higher, while the Nifty crossed the 24,300 mark. Top gainers included AU Small Finance Bank (up 8.42%) and HCL Technologies (up 7.71%). Major losers were Blue Star and Spandana Sphoorty. Meanwhile, global agencies revised India’s FY26 GDP forecast to 6.2–6.7% due to global economic uncertainty. Despite this, India remains the fastest-growing major economy amid trade tensions and slowing global growth.

  1. Treasury Yields: 

    • US Treasury yields were mixed intraday, with the two-year rate rising 5.5 basis points to 3.83% and the 10-year rate dropping 1 basis point to 4.40%.

  2. Currency: 

    • The dollar index was trading slightly above 99 levels.

  3. Commodities:

    • West Texas Intermediate crude oil was up 1.8% at $64.2 a barrel. In contrast, Brent crude oil futures rose above $68 per barrel on Wednesday, extending a gain of nearly 2% from the previous session, supported by fresh US sanctions and a sharp drop in crude stockpiles.

    • Gold was down 1% at $3,391 per troy ounce after briefly trading above $3,500 to an all-time high earlier on Tuesday. Silver edged 0.1% lower to $32.80 per ounce.


Asian Markets

  1. General Trends:

    • Asia-Pacific markets climbed Wednesday, after all three key benchmarks on Wall Street advanced overnight on optimism that US-China trade tensions could ease.

  2. Specific Index Performance:

    • Japanese markets led gains in Asia, surging nearly 2% in early trade. The benchmark Nikkei 225 added 1.99%, while the broader Topix index advanced 1.92%.

    • In South Korea, the Kospi index increased 0.86% while the small-cap Kosdaq added 0.62%.

    • Futures for Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index stood at 21,772, pointing to a stronger open compared to the HSI’s last close of 21,562.32.


India Market Outlook

  1. Market in Previous Session:

    • Benchmark indices extended their winning streak for the sixth straight session, buoyed by strong buying interest in the Realty, FMCG, and Pharma sectors, supported by sustained foreign inflows.

    • At the close Sensex rose by 187.09 points (0.24%) to settle at 79,595.59, while the Nifty added 41.70 points (0.17%) to close at 24,167.25.

    • Sectoral breadth remained positive across the board, with Nifty Realty, Bank, FMCG, and Pharma emerging as the top gainers, driving market momentum. On the flip side, Nifty IT remained a drag on the index, underperforming its peers.

    • The Bank Nifty continued its stellar run, notching a new milestone at the 55,961 mark, reflecting sustained strength in the financial space.

    • Broader markets also participated in the rally, with the BSE Midcap and Small cap indices advancing 0.81% and 0.82% respectively, underscoring the broad-based bullish sentiment.


TRADE SETUP FOR APR 23

  1. Nifty Short-Term Outlook:

    • The index has formed a high wave candle with a higher high and higher low, marking its sixth consecutive session of gains, highlighting consolidation with positive bias after the recent strong up move. 

    • Index is currently testing the immediate resistance area of 24,200-24,300. A sustained move above 24,300 could pave the way for further upside towards 24,550 and then towards December 2024, high of 24,850 in the upcoming weeks.

    • Index trends remain firmly positive as it continues to form higher highs and higher lows in the daily chart. Only the formation of a lower high and lower low will signal a pause in the current uptrend. We revise the immediate support base higher towards 23,800 levels, being the Monday’s gap area and the recent breakout area. Stock-specific action will continue to remain in focus as we progress through the Q4 earnings season.

  2. Intraday Levels:

    • Nifty: Intraday resistance is at 24,390 followed by 24,500 levels. Conversely, downside support is located at 24,160, followed by 24,040.

    • Bank Nifty: Intraday resistance is positioned at 56,170, followed by 56,490, while downside support is found at 55,640, followed by 54,350.


Derivative Market Analysis

  1. Nifty:

    • For the upcoming expiry, the highest Call OI is concentrated at the 25,000 level, followed by 24,500. On the downside, immediate highest Put OI is seen at 24,000, followed by 23,500, suggesting key support levels.

    • Call and put writers were active at 24200, making it a crucial level to watch for. The sudden spike of 30% in open interest, along with heavy call writing in yesterday's session signals a possibility of profit booking towards the 24000 levels. 

    • Based on option chain analysis, the broader expected trading range for Nifty is between 24,000 and 24,500.

    • The Nifty Put-Call Ratio currently stands at 1.10.

  2. Bank Nifty:

    • In the Bank Nifty, the highest Call OI is placed at 56,000 indicating strong resistance. On the downside, the highest Put OI is seen at 55,000 suggesting near-term support.

    • A straddle position at the 55,500 strike highlights this as a key level to monitor closely.

    • Call unwinding at between 55000 and 55500 and addition above 55400 is shift of base to the higher strikes indicating 56000 is a crucial resistance level to watch for. Aggresive put writing is seen below 55000 making it a crucial support level.  

    • According to the option chain setup, the immediate trading range for Bank Nifty is projected between 55,000 and 55,500.

    • The Bank Nifty Put-Call Ratio stands at 1.16.


US Share Market News

  1. Performance Overview:

    • US benchmark equity indexes rebounded Tuesday amid hopes for a de-escalation in trade rifts between the US and China.

  2. Sector-Specific Movements:

    • The Nasdaq Composite and the Dow Jones Industrial Average each closed up 2.7% at 16,300.4 and 39,187, respectively, following a four-day losing streak. The S&P 500 rose 2.5% to 5,287.8. All sectors were in the green, led by financials and consumer discretionary.

  3. Economic Indicators:
